Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to qualitative research. The course aims to arouse interest among participants about - sciences, the world-views that are employed in science (especially with reference to social sciences) as well as the philosophical roots and theoretical developments in this field of qualitative research employed in social sciences. The course is designed such that participants get aware of at least two traditions of qualitative research - the positivist and the interpretive traditions. Several methods are dealt under both the traditions. Special focus has been given to case study method under positivist traditions with focus on data collection, analysis, validity requirements and writing. Similarly, special focus has been given to grounded theory method under interpretive traditions. Naturalist enquiry in interpretive traditions has its own tenets, methods and trustworthiness concerns. This course tries to sensitize participants about how they are similar to and different from those of the positivist traditions. Overall the goal is twofold - a. To let participants understand the evolution of sciences and its methods b. To equip participants with some knowledge of conducting qualitative research
